Stores can expect 23rd December 2006 to be biggest shopping day ever.
OXFORD UK, December 13th 2006
As we head towards the busiest shopping weeks of the year the grocery sector is again showing strong growth versus the same period last year. Growth within grocery multiples has continued to increase with sales in the 12 weeks to 2nd December standing at 7.6% higher than the same period in 2005.
“Growth is coming from fresh foods, health and personal care, household products and non-food goods. At this time of year we always see particularly strong sales in the non-food sector with shoppers taking advantage of good prices on electricals, clothes and homewear offered by the supermarkets.” Commented Mike Watkins, Senior Manager Retailer Services, ACNielsen. “This year we are also seeing huge rises in fresh food sales as people buy into healthier eating patterns and buy more premium offerings such as organic or pre-prepared fruits and veg.”
Tesco, the country’s largest grocery retailer, remains strong with over 29% share of sales and Asda stands firm in second place once more with a 15.9% share of market, its highest 12 weekly share since this time last year. “Stores with the one-stop shop offering continue to do well. Within the sector the popularity of large out of town mega stores continues to soar with growth here at 7.5% (source: ACNielsen Scantrack).
“We have seen Asda gain back share in the last 12 weeks and furthermore, spend per visit here has increased 10% in the last 4 weeks as consumers begin to make inroads into their Christmas shopping with the non-food offerings the large mega-stores stock such as electricals, entertainment, toys and clothing.” Added Watkins. “Overall the grocery market is buoyant. We are expecting Xmas week’s sales to top £3b at the Grocery Multiples, possibly some 10% up on last year as shoppers complete big trolley shops at out of town stores as late as Saturday afternoon; we expect the 23rd December 2006 to be the biggest shopping day ever as far as grocery retailers are concerned.”
