Under 20’s Least Likely to Object to Skinny Look
Men Less Likely to Think Models are too Thin
OXFORD UK, 6th February 2007
As the fashion world’s attention focuses on London for the forthcoming fashion week, a recent survey reveals that 9 out of 10 people in the UK think fashion models are too thin. The results, taken from a global survey carried out by the Nielsen company, also reveal that in the UK fewer people in the youngest age group polled – those under 20’s – see models as too skinny.
“It is telling that 89% of people polled think that models are too thin. Our fashion and celebrity magazines are splattered with images of skeletal models and the general public recognize this is neither a natural nor attractive female form. However, I think it is worrying that fewer people in the under 20 age group than any other see these models as too thin. This generation has grown up with these images.” Commented Eleni Nicholas, Group MD ACNielsen UK & Ireland, a unit of The Nielsen Company.
The survey also revealed that youngsters are twice as likely than average to not consider fashion models too thin. 1 in 5 of those under 20 said they didn’t think fashion models are too thin as opposed to 9% of those aged between 25-29, 7% of those 35-39 and 50-54, and 3% of those 45-49.
The survey also reveals that less men than women see models as too thin. 85% of British men said they thought models were too thin as opposed to 93% of female respondents. In a separate Nielsen survey, around a third of UK women said they were constantly striving to loose weight. “The fact that the male/female response differs almost 10 percentage points perhaps reflects the pressure today’s women feel under to be thin.“ Added Ms Nicholas.
