With spring in the air, latest grocery share figures from ACNielsen demonstrate that consumer demand remains strong as the grocery sector shows 7.5% growth over the latest 12 weeks. Both Waitrose and The Co-Op are showing double-digit growth, as consumer demand for organic, fairtrade and fresh food remains strong.
The big 3 supermarkets are all showing growth ahead of total grocery with Tesco growth at 9.2%, Asda growth at 9.1% and Sainsbury’s growth at 8.1% in the 12 weeks to 24th February 2007.
Mike Watkins, Senior Manager, Retailer Services at ACNielsen commented, "Total Till growthsat the Grocery Multiplesremain in high single digits as shoppers spend heavily on Fresh Foods. In the last 4 weeks produce has grown +9%, Fresh Meat +7% and General Merchandise by +9%. And whilst shopper penetration is increasing fast in Organic, it is strong consumer demand for premium foods that is helping to drive top line food sales. Premium is now one of the fastest growing categories in Grocery Multiples with +10% growths over the last year as retailers develop new ranges to capitalise on the consumer interest inhealthyfoodwith provenance"
